Award winning decaf coffee Sparkling Water Decaf

Why decaf coffee doesn’t mean sacrificing flavour

For many coffee lovers, the idea of decaf coffee often comes with the misconception that it lacks the depth, richness and most importantly, flavour, of regular coffee. At Rounton Coffee, we’re changing that perception with decaf options that are full of flavour, minus the buzz.

A look at the flavour profile of decaf coffee

Decaf coffee has come a long way, and with the right methods, it’s now as flavourful as regular coffee. We currently have two exceptional decaf coffees on our range: our award-winning Peruvian Sparkling Water Decaf and Lala Salama from Rwanda. Each offers a unique taste experience, thanks to the sparkling water decaffeination process, which preserves the complex flavours in the coffee beans.

The sparkling water decaffeination process

Both our Peruvian Sparkling Water Decaf and Lala Salama decaf coffee use the sparkling water decaffeination process. Although the name can sometimes confuse people into thinking the coffee itself is fizzy, it actually refers to the use of carbonated water to extract caffeine from the beans without stripping away their flavour.

Here’s how it works:

1. The green coffee beans are first soaked in water, allowing the pores to open up as the beans expand.

2. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is introduced, which combines with the water to create sparkling water. This CO2 acts as a magnet to the caffeine molecules, gently extracting them from the beans.

3. The water is drained into an evaporator, where the caffeine-rich CO2 is separated from the water.

4. This cycle is repeated until the beans reach a low enough caffeine level to be considered decaf.

5. Finally, the beans are dried back to their original moisture content and are ready for roasting, retaining the same complex flavours as the original coffee.

This natural, chemical-free process helps us maintain the rich flavour profiles that our customers love.

Exploring our decaf coffee options

Peruvian Sparkling Water Decaf

Our Peruvian Sparkling Water Decaf is by far our most popular decaf, a firm favourite among our customers, award-winning for four years running, and it’s easy to see why. With notes of dark chocolate, cherry, and brown sugar, these decaf beans offer a rich, sweet, and well-rounded drink that’s hard to believe is decaf. Whether you’re brewing it in an AeroPress, V60 or even a cold brew, this Great Taste award-winner performs beautifully across various methods, making it one of the best decaf coffee options on the market.

Recently, our Sparkling Water Decaf coffee beans won Silver at the Great British Food Awards, which was a massive achievement for us and we are super proud of this accolade.

How decaf coffee compares to regular coffee

One of the biggest misconceptions about decaf coffee is that it doesn’t compare to regular coffee in terms of taste. However, with carefully chosen coffee beans and a commitment to quality, decaf can absolutely hold its own. Well, we certainly believe our decaf coffees do anyway! Both the Peruvian Sparkling Water Decaf and Lala Salama have distinct flavours that are comparable to their caffeinated counterparts, proving that with the right process, decaf coffee can be just as delicious.
