We first read about the great news through an e-mail, we had been selected as a finalist for a Flavours of Herriot Award. David and I were over the moon, just the fact that we had been recognised for our work was amazing. We had been put forward for The Specialist Retailer of the year award.
After spending a gruelling year renovating our old Granary and then working in between jobs to get Rounton Coffee off the ground, this for us was the light at the end of our tunnel. We were up against some really well established businesses and David and I felt really privileged to be judged alongside them.
The Flavours of Herriot Awards were designed to celebrate Hambleton and Richmondshire’s food and drinks industry.
The day of the awards soon arrived and we made our way to Thirsk Racecourse for a day full of locally sourced food and drink, oh and not forgetting awards. We always love these kind of events, this is where you are guaranteed to meet outstanding local businesses. Hardworking people who are really passionate about the goods they are producing, businesses that really take pride in what they do.
We were seated at a table full of Yorkshire goodies; Mad Hatter Tea, Chocolates and Black Sheep Beers! The menu was full of locally sourced treats and the wine was flowing.
We had some great entertainment from Queen Marys School Choir followed by an introduction to the Presenter of the awards Stephanie Moon. The Head of a Chef consultancy business, who is well-known for her many television appearances.
The announcements began, we were newcomers. Compared to some of the winners we thought we had no hope.
We were sat sipping wine when our category was introduced. Stephanie spoke a little about each finalist and then was passed an envelope. “And the winner is, Rounton Coffee”
We couldn’t believe it.
We made our way up to the stage to collect our award. Specialist Retailer of the Year!
