Great coffee is about more than just beans - it's about every step of the journey from farm to cup. That's why we’ve taken a big step forward by upgrading to the Loring S35 Kestrel roaster. This addition to our roastery goes beyond being just a new piece of kit; it shows our commitment to quality, sustainability, and delivering the best coffee to you.
Why we made the switch to Loring
Upgrading our coffee roaster was no small decision. After years on our 30kg Mill City and earlier, a 10kg Toper, we needed a roaster that could meet demand and align with our sustainability goals.
The Loring S35 is renowned for its fuel efficiency, using up to 80% less energy than traditional roasters. Committed to reducing our environmental impact, this change aligns perfectly with our values. But beyond its eco-friendly benefits, the Loring is also a game-changer for how we roast coffee.
What it means for us
Efficiency is key in any business, and the Loring S35 Kestrel is helping us roast even more coffee in less time without compromising on quality. With its precision control, we can now roast larger batches with incredible consistency. This means less downtime, more coffee roasted daily, and fewer roasting days - helping us meet demand and stay nimble as we grow.
But perhaps the best part for us as coffee roasters is the flexibility it provides. The Loring allows us to experiment more with roasting profiles, bringing out unique flavours in our coffees that we couldn’t quite get before. It’s all about creating a balance between efficiency and creativity, and the Loring is helping us hit that sweet spot.
What it means to you, our customers
So, what does this mean for you, our customers? For starters, you’ll enjoy coffee that stays fresher for longer. The advanced technology of the Loring ensures a more even roast, preserving the flavour of each coffee bean. Each cup has greater depth, complexity, and balance - whether it's a fruity coffee from Uganda or Rwanda or a smooth, chocolatey brew from Brazil or Colombia.
The Loring helps us keep our promise of delivering high-quality specialty coffee. Enhanced control ensures every batch is roasted to perfection, so your favourite coffee tastes consistently great.
We recommend brewing your coffee 10 to 12 days after roasting to enjoy the best flavour. When coffee beans come straight out of the roaster, they are full of gases, especially carbon dioxide. If brewed too soon, this gas can create an acidic taste, and the full flavour of the coffee won’t come through. As the beans rest, they naturally de-gas, allowing these gases to escape through the one-way valve on our coffee bags. This resting period helps the coffee develop its complexity and balance.
While you might think the final stage of coffee roasting is when it comes out of the roaster, Jamiel, our head of coffee, says resting is the final stage. While this wasn’t as critical with the Mill City roaster, it’s an essential part of the process with the Loring. The flavours open up and come into focus as the coffee approaches the two-week mark. This distinction with Loring roasting brings a more nuanced, flavourful cup - well worth the wait.
Coffee is all about preference, so we encourage you to experiment with brewing times to find what suits you best. If you're new to coffee, try different methods and timings - you might discover something amazing.
