Ethiopia - Duromina

Black Tea, Nectarine, Floral

Delightfully delicate, Duromina has all the hallmarks of a great washed Ethiopian lot. With floral notes and a punchy black tea base, it's a coffee to savour and explore the changing flavours as it cools.

This is a welcome return to the roastery, having first roasted Duromina in 2019. The lots seem to get better and better, and we're excited to be able to share it with you again. We think Duromina is best enjoyed as a filter brew, to highlight some of the more juicy characteristics. It also makes a brilliant cold brew!

The Duromina Farmers Cooperative was formed in 2010, comprised of 100 neighbouring farmers.

The word Duromina translates to "to improve their lives", and the cooperative has been able to work towards this through the production of exceptional coffee.

Jimma Zone, Oromia

This is one of the world's most celebrated coffee producing regions. With very high altitude, rich and fertile soils, Ethiopia's incredibly complex heirloom varietals and good rainfall, the coffees produced by the Duromina Cooperative are complex and naturally sweet.

Washed

Ripe coffee cherries are picked, and sorted to remove any defects. They then pass through a depulper, where the felsh of the cherry is removed, leaving behind a sticky mucilage layer. Next, the beans are fermented, and the mucilage layer breaks down, leaving a clean coffee bean behind. The beans are then carefully dried, resulting in a clean-tasting coffee with natural sweetness and complexity.

Floral Intensity

Washed Ethiopian coffees are known for their floral character. We enjoy brewing Duromina as a filter coffee, to best show off the changing flavours as it cools. Look out for sweet nectarine-like notes, as well as a black tea body.

The Duromina Cooperative

ETHIOPIA - DUROMINA

In 2010, around one hundred local coffee farmers banded together to form Duromina. As the name suggests, their goal was simple: to improve their lives. With technical support, business advice and access to finance through TechnoServe’s Coffee Initiative, the members acquired and installed a wet mill and began processing fully washed coffee for the first time.

These improvements helped Duromina produce high-quality coffee and bring new prosperity to the community. Two years later, an international panel of professional judges would select Duromina’s coffee as the best in Africa, awarding the cooperative the top prize in the leading regional cupping competition.
